Series:

1916-2016 Centenary

This centenary series explores the 1916 Easter Rising from multiple angles. Historians Dr Margaret Ward, Fearghal McGarry, and Michael Pierce discuss women’s participation, Dublin’s Abbey Theatre, Irish literature, and class divisions during 1914-1918. Philip Orr profiles three Protestant nationalists – Roger Casement, Jack White and Bulmer Hobson. Jason Burke offers a Unionist critique of the Rising, while Dr Fearghal Mac Bhloscaidh (in Irish with subtitles) traces republicanism’s development in the years leading to 1916. Seán Byers examines Belfast trade unionists’ reactions and subsequent attempts to engage with the Rising’s legacy. Kate O’Malley draws connections between Irish and Indian nationalist movements. Together, the series presents competing narratives and overlooked dimensions of one of Ireland’s pivotal historical moments.
