Civil Rights Conversations

Civil Rights Conversations marks the 40th anniversary of Northern Ireland’s Civil Rights movement with first‑hand accounts from former activists. Host Michael Pierse and Ciaran O’Brolchain interview participants who were on the ground during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The guests include Erskine Holmes, who served on the committee of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association; Lynda Walker, a women’s rights and civil rights campaigner; and Joe Bowers, who reflects on his experiences from fifty years later. Each episode centres individual memories and perspectives: how people understood what was happening at the time, what they hoped to achieve, and how they navigated the turbulence that followed.

Recorded in late 2018, it’s oral history at its most direct: participants speaking for themselves about a defining moment in the city’s history.

In this episode civil rights activist Joe Bowers, recalls his personal experience of that turbulent moment in our history.
