The Time Traveller’s Suitcase

The Time Traveller’s Suitcase uses everyday objects as windows into life in the mid‑twentieth century. Independent museum curator Ciaran Doran, joined at times by colleague David McCallion, examines artefacts from the home front era, particularly World War II and the post‑war period.

Episodes explore surprising stories hidden in ordinary items: the ‘Mickey Mouse’ gas mask and a secret compass concealed inside Monopoly boards; ‘The Victor Fire Escape’ and heating homes without electricity; 1940s hair curlers and Burman clippers; wedding cakes that aren’t what they seem; and the devastation of the Belfast Blitz. A special Christmas edition visits a secret garden on Belfast’s outskirts.
