War Stories

War Stories presents first‑hand accounts from World War II veterans, part of Northern Visions’ Remembrance strand. Across six episodes recorded in March 2013, men from across Ulster and Britain recount their wartime experiences in their own words.

Ken Smith, an Antrim war veteran, describes piloting a landing craft at Omaha Beach during the D‑Day assault and his later service aboard World War II submarines. Jim McCall of Mossley, a Royal Navy wireless telegraphist, served on HMS Prince of Wales during its battle with the Bismarck, was captured by the Japanese in the Far East and survived the notorious Burma ‘Death Railway’. A Halifax bomb aimer recalls being shot down over the French‑Belgian border, while other episodes cover a minesweeper crewman, a D‑Day commando, and a despatch rider alongside a Wren.

Each episode is an individual‘s story rather than a broad narrative, capturing the range of service – from the beaches of Normandy to the Pacific and the skies over Europe.

Antrim war veteran Ken Smith, who piloted a landing craft at Omaha Beach on that fateful day tells his story.
