Cathedral Quarter documents the transformation of Belfast’s oldest neighbourhood from post-industrial decline to the city’s cultural heart.
The series opens with the area’s history as a trading district built on linen and shipbuilding, then follows the Laganside Corporation’s regeneration efforts from the late 1980s onward. Episodes profile the early pioneers – architects, restaurateurs and community entrepreneurs – who moved into vacant buildings and pushed for an arts quarter. The role of culture in regeneration comes under scrutiny, alongside ambitions like the £400m Royal Exchange development and what came to be known as lost opportunities.
Broadcast in May 2018, it’s both a chronicle of urban change and a reflection on what gets preserved – and what gets left behind – when a neighbourhood is reinvented.
